“Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live.Teach them to your children and to their children after them.” Deuteronomy 4:9
There is a parable about the golden goose that lays golden eggs. As long as the goose was taken care of, protected, and well nourished, it continued to lay the golden eggs. But one day, the family decided that they wanted their fair share of the goose and divided it up. We all know what happened then. The goose could no longer produce golden eggs and eventually all the family members spent the eggs that it had lain and had nothing to show for it.
